sustainable tourism to fight poverty

Sustainable tourism as a mean to fight against poverty

Poverty and social exclusion present complex challenges for many individuals worldwide, limiting access to basic needs like education, healthcare, and employment.

Hospitality and tourism education and training offer a pathway out of poverty, empowering individuals and communities for a more inclusive future.

The hospitality and tourism industry is a key driver of economic growth and job creation, providing over 334 million jobs globally and contributing 10.3% to the global GDP in 2023.

Entry-level positions in this industry have low barriers to entry, making them accessible even to those with limited education or qualifications, particularly in developing economies.

Tailored training programs play a crucial role in equipping individuals with the skills needed to secure jobs in the industry, lifting them out of poverty and towards financial stability.

These programs not only provide technical skills but also essential soft skills like communication, customer service, problem-solving, and teamwork, enhancing employability across various sectors besides hospitality and tourism.

Investing in tourism education and training has a ripple effect on local economies, improving the quality of service for tourists, enhancing the visitor experience, thus increasing destination competitiveness.

This, in turn, attracts more tourists, leading to further economic growth and job opportunities.

To achieve this, scholarships and financial assistance to students from disadvantaged backgrounds must be offered, ensuring that financial barriers do not hinder their access to education.

Flexible learning options are to be available to allow individuals with various commitments and responsibilities to pursue their education at their own pace.

Those programs should not only focus on technical skills but also emphasize the importance of soft skills, such as communication, teamwork, and problem-solving, which are essential for career success in the industry.

They also should prioritize the inclusion of women and youth, primarily from marginalized communities, providing them with equal opportunities for training and career growth.

Furthermore, sustainable tourism practices must be integrated into these training programs, educating students on the importance of preserving local environments and cultures.

By doing so, they contribute to the long-term sustainability of the industry and ensure that tourism benefits local communities.
